Dermatologist and Trichologist?

What’s the difference in a
Dermatologist and Trichologist?

There are specialists for all areas of the human body, but a trichologist specializes in alopecia and scalp disorders. While a dermatologist looks at alopecia and scalp disorders, their area of interest is body skin.  A dermatologist has a medical degree and has studied further to specialize in dermatology.  Trichology is a paramedical profession; a trichologist need not be a doctor of medicine for treatments in this area.  Dermatologists and Trichologists provide hair care, and they both evaluate alopecia and hair follicles to see if they are damaged.  Both specialists also either recommend hair care treatments or refer clients to other specialists if needed.

Some disorders that both specialists see include psoriasis, seborrhea dermatitis and eczema.  Even though, like many medical specialists, dermatologists and trichologists share a certain amount of turf, only a few dermatologists have trichology credentials.  The American Academy of Dermatology recognizes the field of trichology and currently has one board member who is a trichologist.  Therefore a consumer visiting a trichologist should feel confident in the knowledge and care that they will receive. They are what you may call your Hair Doctor, but they are still a stylist with extensive knowledge and understanding of the science that concerns hair loss and scalp disorders.  Their setup is more like a salon clinic with private rooms for trichology.

Do you have questions like:

    • “Is there a hair loss solution”?
    • “Can someone help with my Hair Loss and Thinning”?
    • “Is there help for this Itchy Scalp”?
    • “Why does the Relaxer keep breaking my hair?’
    • “Are the Chemicals really the problem?’

If you have questions like these and haven’t found a solution, you may need to see a Trichologist.
